RIC BGO Tool

An internal web tool for a consulting firm — staff and their clients upload a spreadsheet, the numbers are run through an optimisation model, and an optimised version comes back.

Overview

RIC's engineers had built a powerful optimisation model, but it only ran as a script on their own laptops. Using it meant editing a file path by hand and running it locally every single time, and their clients could not use it at all without someone doing it for them.

This turned that process into a website. You download the template, fill it in, upload it, and press a button. The run happens on a server rather than anyone's machine, progress appears on screen while it works, and the finished spreadsheet is there to download when it's done. Clients use it directly, without an engineer in the loop.

Every run is kept, so past work stays available instead of living in someone's downloads folder — production holds around 870 of them. It was my first freelance project, built over about two months, and it has been in daily use ever since.

Highlights

  • Took a tool that only worked on its authors' laptops and made it something clients can run themselves

  • Long calculations report progress as they go, so a slow run never looks like a frozen page

  • Every run is stored and stays downloadable, giving the team a searchable history of past work

  • Access is tiered, so clients only ever see their own work

  • Delivered as a freelance commission and still running in production years later
